What People Wore to the Sky Ferreira Concert
what happens when you fill a room with nostalgic Tumblr kids?
December 11th, 2023 - Webster Hall, NY - “I have a strange request. It’s not that strange. Can we make the lights a lot darker?” Sky Ferreira took the stage in NYC for the first time in ten years on Tuesday and not once did she have a spotlight shine on her. Mood.
Since her debut album Night Time My Time Ferreira hasn’t released any new music besides a handful of singles and features (#FreeSkyFerreira). In an interview with The Guardian, Ferreira said that Capitol Records “robbed of (her) 20s” by suppressing her music since 2013. We were robbed too. Our growth was stunted when nothing came after Night Time My Time. Maybe that’s why it was so easy to feel fourteen again at this show. It was like bringing a moment from 2013 into the present. It gave us all an opportunity to connect with our younger selves, dress up as if we were taking a break from scrolling on Tumblr to go to a show with our friends and smoke a joint before, during, and after (this part is eternal). I noticed a significantly reduced amount of phones in the crowd. Sure people recorded, but from my POV, even on some of her most popular songs, there were only a handful of phones up. We’ve waited ten years to see her live and I think most of us just wanted to cherish the moment.
I finally made it to the balcony at Webster Hall. I remember looking up from the crowd as a teenager and thinking those people were either rich or old. I’m not rich, but I’m definitely getting older. I looked down at the crowd and thought, “Look at all these kids. We’re so happy right now.”
