Last Sunday at noon, an incredibly sexy crowd of Lynn Yaeger fans lined up outside The Standard East Village for the chance to take home some of the icon’s preloved pieces. This is the first closet sale I’ve ever been to, and if I’m comparing it to sales I’ve seen in early 2000s TV and film, it seemed much more laid back than most.
Anytime style icons of NYC gather to sell their clothes, there are sure to be equally stylish people in attendance. Last year, I tried documenting concert fashion at the Sky Ferreira show and haven’t done it again since, but I thought the sale of the century would be the perfect place to continue practicing my street style photography skills, and I’m happy I did. I love observing what people are wearing, and it’s even lovelier to see how people light up when you tell them you love their outfits too.
Off first impression, the closet sale feels like a scavenger hunt, a maze you navigate while waiting for someone else to drop their find back on the rack. Most of fashion feels like a scavenger hunt to me. I carried around a layered, roped-up AllSaints dress from Lynn’s racks for a while, but eventually decided I wouldn’t realistically wear it very often. I did see someone pick it up later, though, and I knew they were definitely going to love it harder than I would.
Everything I took home was actually from Chloe’s closet, which felt like a happy accident since I had no idea she’d be there, and I’ve been perpetually bummed about missing her last closet sale. I chose my pieces, headed to the check-out table, and had my bag all packed when, of course, the evil demon platform that is Venmo decided not to work—no matter how many bank accounts or cards I added. The only other option was cash, so I was forced to run three blocks to an ATM and back. When I finally made it back, Chloe was standing next to me. I turned, panting, and said, “I just ran to an ATM and back,” to which she replied, “Oh my goodness gracious!”
It was a sale to remember, and even if some went home empty-handed, we all left full and fed by the energy that bubbles in a room full of fashion fangirls.
I’ll shut up now, here’s the outfits!
Tabi sneakers are actually great for running in!
