outfit diary #1: stop forcing people to have a favorite color
but black, white, blue, and gray are my current faves
“What’s your favorite color?” It’s a routine question we reach for when we’ve met someone new and want to figure them out. When did society decide colors should be favored? The Earth knows no favoritism of color and instead teaches us to shift with the shading of the sun and the ebb of our temper. My brother said to me the other day, “I don’t think I’ve ever had a favorite color,” and I agreed with him. I’ve never felt attached to any one color long enough to claim it as part of my personality. Anytime I’ve answered the question, I’ve felt unsure about my answer. Blue… but I love it when it touches white. Pink… but black brings out her sense of humor. Mint green… but only in the context of silver and 2014.
Getting dressed is like painting, and the colors on your palette are key to setting the tone of your mobile portraiture. One of the saddest parts of being a fashion girlie with no friends is rarely having anywhere to go where my outfits can be viewed in passing, like a beautiful painting in a museum, that you might glance at in trying to reach the Monet before the crowd. On days when I have time to spare, I like to build outfits in my room and photograph them, to exercise my outfit-building muscles and feel that I am coloring my life in a way that reflects my emotions, which are in constant flux and never favored.
Lately, I’ve been feeling black, white, blue, and gray; a combination I think is gorgeously mundane, serene, and a bit melancholy.

What colors are you painting your life with right now?
Navy blue and light pink are my favourite colours but I have surprisingly few items in my closet that align with these. I think I mainly wear black and white but I’ve been trying to incorporate pops of colour with some red shoes or a colourful tote bag!
